More than half of newly registered cars in berlin are electric

Of all newly registered cars in December 2022 in Berlin, 4,418 were electric. Although December is traditionally a record month for vehicle registrations, for the first time more than half of new registrations were electric cars (52%). This is almost twice as many electric cars as in December 2021.

Gernot Lobenberg, Head of the Berlin Agency for Electromobility eMO at Berlin Partner: “More than half of newly registered vehicles were electric in one month? Until recently, that would have seemed unrealistic, as would double the amount compared to December 2021. Although registration numbers are still high in December, this is a real milestone for electromobility.”

In December 2022, newly registered vehicles in Berlin included 2,472 solely battery electric vehicles (BEV) and 1,946 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV), i.e. vehicles that can be charged via the mains power supply (Brandenburg 1,742 / 1,946).

The number of electric vehicles in Berlin and Brandenburg continues to see a sharp increase: according to current figures (as at 1/10/2022) from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), Berlin already has 50,271 electric cars and Brandenburg has 33,084 electric cars in operation.

Of the electric cars in Berlin, 55.8% of vehicles are used for commercial use, while 44.2% are for private use. Commercial traffic therefore plays a decisive role for electromobility in urban areas.

In Brandenburg as a non-city State, the proportion of commercial use is lower at 32%. There, 50% of newly registered vehicles in the previous month were electric (2,934), which corresponds to 63 percentage points more than in December 2021.

You can find these and other figures in graphical form on our Website.
