For a small talk with Aletta von Massenbach

Aletta von Massenbach, CEO Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH

1. Why do you engage as a Berlin-Partner?

As an airport, we are always interested in gaining a solid understanding of Berlin’s economy and the needs of local businesses. Berlin Partner provides us with access to a broad network of Berlin-based companies, fosters open exchange, and strengthens mutual understanding. This creates new impulses that we are happy to take up.

2. What drives your company, what are you currently working on?

Our goal is to connect Berlin and the capital region with the world in the best possible way. We want people to travel to and from Berlin easily—whether for holidays, family visits, business appointments, trade fairs, or cultural experiences. Good connectivity is a key factor in the attractiveness and competitiveness of this location. When people can’t travel, it’s not just the airport that feels the impact—the entire economic region is affected. In this context, Berlin Partner is an important ally for us in global marketing activities for the capital region, at international trade fairs, and in attracting new airlines.

3. What do you appreciate about the (economic) location Berlin?

I’m impressed by the dynamic development of Berlin and the surrounding region. It’s phenomenal—and our airport plays a key role in this success story. We ensure that people and markets come together. The importance of good connectivity for an emerging business location is especially evident in the southeast of Berlin: since the decision to build the airport nearly 30 years ago, the region around BER has developed rapidly. Today, it is a booming economic area. Air travel is a crucial driver of this positive development. We are proud of this and want to continue advancing this growth for the entire capital region.

4. What distinguishes your company at the Berlin location in terms of collaboration?

When I open the newspaper or turn on the TV these days, I sometimes get the impression that climate protection and sustainability have fallen out of fashion. We do not follow this trend. The path to sustainable airport operations remains a core part of our corporate strategy. We are committed to reducing our self-generated CO₂ emissions by at least 65 percent by 2030 compared to the base year 2010. By 2045 at the latest, we aim to be CO₂-neutral. We are taking concrete steps: our first in-house photovoltaic systems on our parking garages have been supplying renewable electricity since spring—and we will soon expand to open spaces. We are also vigorously expanding our charging infrastructure and supporting our ground handling partners in switching to e-mobility. In addition, we support hundreds of local projects and initiatives every year, actively contributing to the region.
