Berlin gets it right: AssistMe GmbH

Berlin, 29.06.2026 - More than 5.5 million people in Germany are estimated to require long-term care, many of them in residential facilities.  In 2025 alone, roughly 11,646 nursing homes provided around 914,000 care places nationwide.  Together, these figures highlight the immense responsibility shouldered by care professionals – a workload that continues to intensify amid ongoing skilled labor shortages. For Berlin-based health tech/medtech startup AssistMe, these figures are more than statistics – they are a catalyst for innovation.  The company develops digital assistance solutions that reduce the workload for caregivers while improving outcomes for people in need of care, with the ambition not just to maintain quality, but to enhance it sustainably.

Founded in Berlin in 2017 by Julio Brandl, AssistMe GmbH tackles structural challenges in the care sector head-on. Its mission is clear: to streamline care processes through digital solutions while elevating standards of care delivery.  It is an ambitious undertaking. As demand for care services continues to rise, the shortage of qualified professionals remains acute.  AssistMe addresses this gap by digitalizing care workflows through sensor-based IoT technology integrated into a scalable SaaS platform.

At the core of the company’s portfolio is its digital assistance system alea®, which enables real-time detection of incontinence   – a condition affecting approximately 10 million people in Germany. The sensor-based solution seamlessly combines hardware and software.  Integrated sensor strips measure moisture levels within incontinence products, while a compact clip captures the data and transmits it to a secure cloud platform. Care professionals receive real-time updates via an app or web interface, enabling faster response times and more targeted support. The impact is tangible: fewer routine checks, more streamlined workflows and improved outcomes for both caregivers and patients. In addition to incontinence monitoring, the system analyzes movement patterns, detects falls and generates automated documentation. AI-supported data insights allow care teams to intervene early  – helping to prevent complications such as skin irritation or pressure ulcers.

For the AssistMe team, digitalization is not about replacing caregivers, but about empowering them. By optimizing processes and routines, the technology frees up valuable time for what matters most:  meaningful human interaction.  To accelerate adoption and ensure practical relevance, the startup works closely with nursing home operators, collaborates with academic partners and maintains strong relationships with manufacturers of incontinence products. AssistMe is part of a new generation of digital health startups integrating IoT technologies into the care sector. In 2023, the company was honored with the Deep Tech Award in the IoT / Industry 4.0 category, followed by a nomination for the Innovation Award Berlin Brandenburg in 2025.  Most recently, AssistMe secured €5.2 million in fresh capital from investors including Albers Investment and IBB Capital. The funding will drive the continued rollout of the alea® system across outpatient and clinical care settings and support the establishment of production capacity in Brandenburg.
