Brain City Berlin - the city of bright minds

11. May 2023 – Numerous great names in the history of science are closely associated with Berlin and underline the city's long scientific tradition. Most recently it was Professor Dr. Emmanuelle Charpentier, who in 2020 brought a Nobel Prize for Chemistry back to Berlin as a co-developer of the so-called genome editing tool Crispr/Cas9. In a recent Brain City Interview, the microbiologist and managing director of the Max Planck Unit for the Science of Pathogens (MPUSP) discusses what has happened in research since then, what projects she is currently involved with

Scientific talents from all over the world appreciate the open research atmosphere and the high quality of life in the scientific metropolis. In addition to information on the main research areas, career opportunities and stories, renowned scientists as well as young talents and representatives of scientific institutions who, as ambassadors of Berlin-born science, want to inspire people from all over the world for Brain City Berlin.

The strengths of Brain City Berlin are also its characteristics.

Diversity of expertise: The range of content in Berlin's science landscape is exceptionally broad. Brain City offers expertise for almost every research-related topic.

High density of research institutions: World-class scientists conduct research at around 40 universities and more than 70 non-university institutions. 

Interdisciplinary cooperation: Both scientists and companies benefit from the diverse collaborations between the different institutions. Future-oriented solutions, approaches and innovations are developed in close cooperation with the business community.

Open research atmosphere: Scientists from all over the world shape the capital's unique academic, cultural and economic climate. They all value the intensive collaboration between the various institutions and disciplines. 

Excellent research and teaching: The award given to the Berlin University Alliance as part of the Excellence Strategy of the federal and state governments illustrates the high level of Berlin's top-level research. At the same time, the title "Excellence University" awarded to the university alliance underscores the potential for success of Berlin's cooperative spirit.
