Transformation by Design
Berlin, 10 September 2026 – How does change happen? There are many possible answers to that question, but one thing is certain: Only those who actively engage in change can help shape it and influence the direction it takes. On September 10, 2026, anyone interested in doing just that – and in exploring design as an important element of transformation – will have an opportunity to exchange ideas and connect with designers as well as representatives from business, civil society and politics at the international FORM/FUTURE design conference. Under the theme “Process & Principles,” thought leaders, companies, studios and institutions will come together in the main hall of Tempelhof Airport. In addition to keynotes and panel discussions, the program features master classes and pop-up experiences that combine creative inspiration with practical solutions, new approaches and effective tools.
Tempelhof Airport is one of Berlin’s most historically significant sites, embodying the city’s eventful past, urban life and spirit of innovation. As Europe’s largest listed historic building and areal, it provides an ideal setting for FORM/FUTURE to explore how design as a discipline can foster sustainable synergies across fields as diverse as food and hospitality, construction, politics, AI, geopolitics and culture. This year’s speakers include designers, researchers, strategists and voices from the cultural sector who will invite participants to consider a central question: How can design thinking become both a methodology and a clear guiding principle? Experts include Alexander Gutzmer, professor of communication and media at Quadriga University of Applied Sciences; Alina Rathke, creative industries officer at the Berlin Senate Department for Economic Affairs, Energy and Public Enterprises; Diana Belodedov, product owner at Volkswagen AG; Frederike Kintscher-Schmidt, president of the Association of German Industrial Designers (VDID); and Victoria Ringleb, managing director of the Alliance of German Designers (AGD). Dr. Stefan Franzke, managing director of Berlin Partner, will also share his expertise and experience as a speaker on one of the conference panels. Berlin Partner is also responsible for organizing the conference, which is funded by the Berlin Senate Department for Economic Affairs, Energy and Public Enterprises.
FORM/FUTURE is also part of the official program celebrating the 20th anniversary of Berlin’s designation as a UNESCO City of Design. Berlin was the first European city to receive the designation. Twenty years later, the German capital is bringing together creatives, strategists and experts who see design as a driver of innovation and a means of shaping the future. After all, change has a long tradition in Berlin.
