Peak in public charging points: E-mobility is picking up speed

The number of publicly accessible charging points in the State of Berlin reached a high of almost 2,500 in May. This is 34 percent more than one year ago. The number of electric motor vehicles is also steadily increasing. According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), almost 60,000 vehicles in Berlin were already electrically powered (purely battery-electric and plug-in hybrids) in the first quarter of 2023 – that is four percent of all motor vehicles registered in Berlin.

This good development is also a topic at this year’s Capital City Electromobility Conference on 1 June 2023 in the Berlin City Hall, for which around 700 participants are registered on site or for the live stream. 25 contributors from business, science and politics will discuss electromobility in times of the energy and transport turnaround, strategies of the Federal and State governments, the increasing need for charging infrastructure and innovative business models for the mobility of today and tomorrow. Among others, the two new senators for economics, energy and public enterprises, Franziska Giffey, and for mobility, transport, climate protection and the environment, Dr. Manja Schreiner, will be present. The event will conclude with a conversation with Harald Schlarb, who will talk about his experiences in a management position at the Tesla Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg.

The Capital City Electromobility Conference has been organised once a year since 2011 by the Berlin Agency for Electromobility eMO, which is part of Berlin Partner.

Franziska Giffey, Senator for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises: “Mobility geared towards climate protection is one of the most important levers for achieving a climate-neutral Berlin. This also includes a corresponding conversion of vehicles in commercial transport. The Senate supports Berlin’s economy in this regard: whether in the electrification of fleets, the expansion of the charging infrastructure or also in the establishment of sustainable solutions in companies and businesses. As part of the business development agency Berlin Partner for Business and Technology, the Berlin Agency for Electromobility eMO, which is based in the State, plays an important role in the expansion of electromobility. It can be contacted as a pilot for companies and accompanies them in the targeted use of innovations in companies. This is how we make faster and better progress.”

Dr Stefan Franzke, CEO, Berlin Partner: “The effects of traffic on the environment, the climate and people must also be significantly reduced in Berlin. So it is all the nicer to see that the capital has increasingly developed into an industry hub for electromobility – this is where things are founded, tested and applied. The transformation process is in full swing - with many new opportunities for Berlin. To take advantage of these opportunities, the eMO team at Berlin Partner is working very successfully to advance smart and forward-looking mobility further.”

Gernot Lobenberg, Head of the Berlin Agency for Electromobility eMO: “Despite many sustainable mobility solutions, emissions in the transport sector have not been significantly reduced over the past decade. In order to achieve our climate goals, the focus must above all be on sustainable modes of transport - walking, cycling, public transport as well as electromobility and sharing mobility. Berlin’s businesses play a major role here, because 15 percent of cars in Berlin are commercially registered, and 58 percent of electric cars are commercially registered. It is therefore good if the State of Berlin promotes electric vehicles and charging infrastructure for small and medium-sized companies with WELMO.”

Further information and figures can be found graphically on the eMO website.

About the eMO:
The Berlin Agency for Electromobility eMO supports the market ramp-up of electromobility and the use of new, innovative mobility solutions for sustainable commercial transport. As a State agency, we support the goals of the State of Berlin and are part of the Berlin business development agency Berlin Partner für Wirtschaft und Technologie GmbH. The tasks of the eMO include the dissemination and testing of new mobility solutions and the management of central State projects. The financing of the eMO and its measures is primarily provided by the Berlin Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises and by numerous partners from business, science and the public sector in Berlin and Brandenburg.
