Berlin bites into innovation

Berlin, Nov. 10, 2025 – Berlin is a city best experienced with all the senses. There’s much to see and hear, distinctive scents in the air, and plenty that only truly comes to life when touched. And of course, the capital region also tastes exceptional. It’s no surprise, then, that Berlin has emerged as both a hotspot for food innovation and the epicenter of Germany’s fast-growing food tech scene. From cow-free cheese and milk alternatives by Formo and Blue Farm, to organic cocoa with guarana by Koawach , cultivated fish cell products by Bluu Seafood, and sustainable meal kits from HelloFresh –  Berlin has become home to a vibrant ecosystem driving the future of food. Here, food companies, research institutions, startups, investors, and mentors work hand in hand to make food production more resource-efficient, sustainable and cutting-edge. To showcase this dynamic network, Berlin Partner has developed an Ecosystem Mapping together with the innovation hub Food Campus BerlinBerlin Food Week and Stammtisch „GmbH“ highlighting the key players shaping the next generation of food technologies.

In Berlin, food tech is no longer a passing trend – it’s a fully fledged industry of the future. What may sound abstract makes a great deal of practical sense. To transform the food sector, companies are harnessing technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, 3D printing and the Internet of Things. The goal is to reduce food waste, conserve resources, improve production efficiency, and ultimately create sustainable, healthy products.  Berlin’s food tech scene is remarkably diverse. Startups are pioneering new approaches and introducing niche products for health-conscious, lifestyle-oriented consumers, while simultaneously developing zero-waste packaging and climate-friendly production methods. Sustainability isn’t treated as an add-on – it’s built into every step of the process. Berlin’s key role in the European landscape is clearly measurable: six of Europe’s 50 leading food tech startups are based in the German capital. Alongside these innovators, established players such as Wilhelm Reuss, as well as research institutions and other initiatives, are helping shape the city’s growing food ecosystem.

Why Berlin? The city offers fertile ground for growth and a powerful network. In addition to its startups, businesses, and research institutions, Berlin also provides targeted funding programs and dedicated innovation hubs for the food industry. One of the most prominent examples is the Food Campus Berlin – a network hub focused on the future of nutrition and food technology. The campus serves as a central platform for science, business, and technology within the food systems sector. Alongside a digital platform that already connects stakeholders worldwide, a physical campus is taking shape – complete with production facilities, laboratories, offices and community spaces. In both its digital and physical form, the Food Campus will focus on key topics such as smart proteins, personalized nutrition, circular economy models and sustainability.

Berlin’s strength as a research hub further drives this development. Research institutions and tech startups are breaking new ground in food technology, advancing innovations from alternative proteins created through cell-based meat and precision fermentation to intelligent sensor systems for quality control and novel cultivation methods such as vertical farming and hydroponics. In Berlin, science and creativity come together – proving that innovation can, quite literally, taste good.
