Globally successful products from the region include ventricular assist devices in the form of external heart pumps from Berlin Heart, pacemakers from Biotronik and stents from B. Braun. In minimally invasive medicine, Berlin-based companies such as World of Medicine, MGB Endoskopische Geräte Berlin and XION have established a strong international presence with endoscopes, insufflators and camera systems. The orthopaedics segment is represented by companies including aap ImplantateMerete MedicalOHST and ZIMMER Biomet Deutschland . In nuclear medicine, innovative products are developed both in research institutions and at companies such as nanoPET Pharma  and global market leader Eckert & Ziegler Strahlen- und Medizintechnik.

In addition to Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, the capital region is home to more than 40 top-tier scientific institutions, including the Berlin Institute of Health (BIH), the German Heart Center Berlin, the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), the Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering IBMT, as well as numerous institutes within the Fraunhofer, Helmholtz, Leibniz and Max Planck networks across Berlin and Brandenburg.
