Berlin gets it right: Modern icons

Berlin, October, 27 2025 -  At Berlin-based Second Ride, “cultural heritage meets the future” is more than just a motto. Founded by Carlo Schmid and Sebastian Marten, the company develops and produces retrofit kits that transform legendary mopeds – such as models from Simson – into fully electric vehicles, and all in just about three hours. This retrofit approach gives vintage mopeds a second life. Second Ride designs the hardware, software, and electronics of its products entirely in-house, including patents for battery technologies. At the same time, the team takes care to preserve the iconic look and feel of the original vehicles. It’s a personal mission, too: both founders have a special connection to these two-wheeled classics, having ridden Simsons as their very first mopeds.

Second Ride has already electrified nine classic Simson models, but with the launch of the new MID50 retrofit kit, the options expand dramatically. Once upgraded, mopeds powered by the MID50 deliver up to 20 horsepower and reach top speeds of 90 km/h, making them eligible for registration as either light motorcycles or small motorcycles. The kit’s real strength lies in its versatility: it can be fitted to roughly half of all mopeds worldwide. Simson enthusiasts also benefit from an included partial inspection certificate, making the approval process easier. In this configuration, with a maximum of 5.5 horsepower, the converted e-mopeds are cleared for speeds of up to 60 km/h.

An equally exciting innovation is Second Ride’s proprietary battery technology, for which two patents have already been filed. Instead of replacing the entire battery when its performance declines, individual cells can be swapped out as needed. This not only extends the battery’s lifespan but also makes it more sustainable. The system also boasts one of the best cooling performances on the market, enabling excellent charging times – a key factor in ensuring the everyday usability of electric mopeds.

To electrify a moped with Second Ride’s retrofit kit, only three components are required: a drive module, a battery, and a set of instruments. The kits are compatible with all mid-engine mopeds from brands such as Simson, MZ, Kreidler, Zündapp, Honda, Yamaha, and Peugeot, with more models in the pipeline. For those confident in their DIY skills, the conversion can be done at home using detailed instructions and video tutorials. For everyone else, the retrofit can be handled by their trusted local workshop.

Second Ride’s vision – and its retrofit kits – have already won over a loyal community of moped enthusiasts. The “Second Ride Community” connects on the software platform Discord, where members share their own experiences and ideas. The exchanges are so constructive that the company has already incorporated community feedback directly into product development. New customers gain access after purchasing a kit, with the forum link available in the shop’s login area. For those who value not just the charm of a classic cult moped but also sustainable, future-focused mobility solutions, Second Ride is the perfect place to start.
