Berlin is knorke: Where small parts spark big change

Berlin, September 29, 2025 - From semiconductor production to photonics and microsystems technology, The products of Berlin-based micro resist technology GmbH (MRT) enable companies in cutting-edge high-tech industries to manufacture ultra-fine structures at the micro and nanometer scale. These include chips, AR glasses, optical filters and photonics components – key building blocks for modern sensors, optical devices and biomedical systems. The company also places a strong emphasis on research and development. Over the past three decades, it has grown into a true hidden champion – made in Berlin.

MRT was founded in 1993 and today positions itself as a mid-sized chemical company developing, producing and distributing specialized materials for global high-tech markets. Its products, such as photoresists, polymers, photopolymers and complementary process chemicals, are used in fields ranging from microsystems technology and nanotechnology to life sciences and augmented and virtual reality. The company places great importance on research, constantly pursuing innovation and progress. Close collaboration with universities and research institutions, as well as active participation in European R&D projects, are central to the work of its more than 50 employees, alongside the ongoing development of its product portfolio. At its Berlin site, MRT combines development, production, logistics and its own laboratory under one roof, serving and advising renowned customers such as Philips and Samsung from the capital.

Since 2011, MRT has also been part of the Resist Alliance, distributing complementary specialty chemicals from manufacturers such as DuPont, Kayaku and DJ MicroLaminates. This allows customers across Europe to benefit from an even broader product range.

The company’s commitment is paying off: On May 6, 2025, MRT received the OWF business award VORSPRUNG from the  East German Business Forum. The prize honors innovation and sustainable growth and is awarded to companies that actively help shape Germany’s economic transformation.

In 2025, MRT also entered into a strategic partnership with Japanese chemical group TOKYO OHKA KOGYO Co., LTD.  (TOK) by signing an acquisition agreement. As part of the TOK Group, the company has secured a strong partner and further expanded its global reach.

More than three decades of experience, a strong spirit of innovation and a clear focus on research: micro resist technology GmbH stands for technological excellence and progress. At the same time, the company is committed to promoting women in STEM professions, improving work-life balance and supporting workforce development through collaborations with universities, vocational schools and technical colleges. MRT proves that  Berlin is not only an attractive location for the creative industries, but also for advanced, specialized manufacturing.
