Climate-neutral Berlin

Berlin, 19.04.2024 - The Berlin senate has set itself the goal of developing Berlin into a climate-neutral city by 2045. In order to achieve this climate goal, the state of Berlin is striving for a transport transition. The drive transition without fossil fuels is of great importance here. In focus: the battery-electric drive.

An overall strategy for charging infrastructure in Berlin has therefore been developed for the first time. The activities, goals and plans in public and private spaces are brought together in it and are presented in a comprehensive expansion strategy for the state of Berlin.

With the constant increase in registered electric vehicles, the energy demand and thus the need for charging infrastructure in different parts of the city increases. The forward-looking expansion of the charging structure by private stakeholders and the state of Berlin is an important measure to support this drive transition.

By the end of 2023, the charging offer in Berlin will have grown to more than 25,000 charging points. Of these, around 3,800 charging points are publicly accessible (2,400 of which are on public roads). Last year alone, around 1,200 new charging points were created as part of the publicly accessible charging network. Overall, it can be said that the charging infrastructure market is developing dynamically.

A cross-departmental project group consisting of the Senate Department for Economics, Energy and Public Enterprises (SenWEB), the Senate Department for Mobility, Transport, Climate Protection and the Environment (SenMVKU) and the Berlin Agency for Electromobility eMO at Berlin Partner was set up to develop this strategy.

Experts from all relevant areas of Berlin’s economy were also involved. This participation process included four workshops in which the goals and measures were reflected and discussed. The workshops were attended by stakeholders from various sectors such as retail, charging infrastructure operators, housing companies, associations from various sectors and scientific institutions.

The results are very impressive. The “Overall charging infrastructure strategy 2030 for the state of Berlin” combines 29 short, medium and long-term measures in the three defined areas (public space, private space that is publicly accessible and purely private space). One of the measures has already been implemented: The website www.ladeinfrastruktur.berlin was created as a central contact point for the topic of charging infrastructure in the state of Berlin in order to group together all information clearly. The 40-page strategy document is also available for download here.
