Annual Report 2023 published

Berlin, 26 February 2024 – At the annual press conference this Monday, Berlin Partner presented its annual report for 2023. The annual report figures show a positive development: This shows that the economy in Berlin is growing, even if the national economy is weakening. A result, that is favoured by various factors which are explained in the annual report.

In particular, the number of new jobs created or secured with the support of Berlin Partner has developed extremely positively. Compared to the previous year 2022, there was an increase of 21 percent. Specifically, this means: 10,124 jobs mark the first time in the history of business development that the number of jobs has reached five figures – a record result that confirms the general upward trend in Berlin (statistically, the number of employees in Berlin increased by around 1.6 percent last year). The vast majority of new jobs (93 percent) that were managed by Berlin Partner are planned as part of projects in the areas of expansion and settlement.

The figures for investments in research and development follow the positive trend with an increase of 42 percent, which amounts to 199.2 million euros. No wonder, science and research in Berlin are both a tradition and the future.  The Berlin science region, with its internationally renowned universities and research institutions, is one of the largest in Europe and a driving force for Berlin’s innovative economy, which is characterised by intensive cooperation between the two sectors. This also applies to the eleven Berlin future locations which house the majority of Berlin’s technology and start-up centres.

Keyword cooperation: In 2023, Berlin Partner was at 18 trade fairs and with 11 delegations worldwide to bring potential business partners into contact, create B2B meetings and networking opportunities and promote the exchange of information. A large number of internationalisation measures are again planned for 2024. The aim: By means of delegation trips, trade fair visits and pitch events, the business development agency promotes the city, connects international investors, potential customers and stakeholders with Berlin’s business community, creates synergies and thus emphasises the attractiveness and adaptability of Berlin as a business location for national and international companies and start-ups.

Outlook on expected developments

In 2023, Berlin Partner supported 269 projects that provided important impetus for the Berlin economy. Economists at the Investitionsbank Berlin (IBB) calculated that Berlin’s gross domestic product will be supported by 1.96 billion euros in the period from 2023 to 2025 from the additional investment and employment effects triggered by economic development. Due to the additional value chain, public revenue will also increase by a total of 250 million euros during this period. The future sectors of ICT media and the creative industries will particularly benefit from the companies’ expected investments of over 893 million euros in Berlin.

Dr. Stefan Franzke, Managing Director of Berlin Partner sums it up: “Berlin companies are showing great dynamism and proving that they can deal with challenges. This also explains why Berlin is comparatively in a good position. The issue of worldwide deglobalisation and the relocation of production means that our economy is growing.  More than half of the settlements last year came from abroad. In order to continue to score points in international competition, we travelled a lot in 2023 to maintain our diverse contacts around the world and to make new ones. This is best done locally and through mutual exchange – and we will of course continue it in 2024.”
