Berlin Takes Top Honors

Berlin, September 24, 2026 – With a total value of €169 billion in venture-backed startups, Berlin is Germany’s largest tech hub. The capital region is home to 57 unicorns and thoroughbreds as well as more than 1,400 venture-backed startups, with 37% of seed-stage startups going on to raise Series A funding. Berlin startups also support 94,000 local jobs and benefit from a deep talent pool, giving the ecosystem considerable international reach. That strength has now earned Berlin recognition from global startup ecosystem research platform StartupBlink, which named the city the “Best Community-Driven Ecosystem in the EU” at its third annual Startup Ecosystem Awards.  The awards ceremony took place on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at the Enterprise Uzbekistan Summit during ICT Week Uzbekistan 2026 in Tashkent.

StartupBlink recognizes cities, countries and regions that perform particularly well in its Global Startup Ecosystem Index.  The company analyzes and evaluates startup ecosystems around the world, translating its findings into data-driven insights that inform decision-making in business, government and across the public and private sectors. According to StartupBlink, its reports and rankings draw on data and input from more than 150 organizations and companies.  First published in 2017, the Global Startup Ecosystem Index now compares startup ecosystems across more than 1,500 cities and 120 countries. The findings are designed to provide guidance not only for founders, but also for investors and decision-makers in business and government: Where are the most promising places to invest or establish a business? Which startup ecosystems offer particularly strong potential?

This year’s award suggests that Berlin is one of them – despite challenges that remain.  The capital region is more dependent on international investors than some other hubs.  Key sectors such as climate tech and defense tech are also becoming increasingly important but are not yet firmly established across the ecosystem.  In other strategic fields such as AI and fintech, London and Paris benefit from larger pools of frontier AI talent and attract higher levels of venture capital. At the same time, Berlin is home to more than 9,000 AI experts, reflecting both strong demand for talent and intense competition among leading AI hubs.  Munich leads Berlin in deep tech, in part due to its stronger focus on hardware and industry,  and also has the edge when it comes to university spinouts. Nevertheless,  Berlin remains Germany’s leading startup hub in StartupBlink’s 2026 ranking and also holds a strong position within Europe.  The city’s strengths include its focus on software and AI as well as the dynamism of its startup community. Well-known success stories include Zalando, HelloFresh, N26 and Delivery Hero. Many former employees of successful startups go on to launch companies of their own, supported by a wide range of public funding programs and a strong infrastructure for building and scaling new businesses.  Close ties with universities and research institutions are another important part of the ecosystem.  Berlin also has a strong track record in spinouts:  Technische Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin are among the top 15 institutions for deep-tech spinouts.  Since 2024, Berlin startups have also attracted €4.9 billion in venture capital, placing the city fourth in Europe by this measure.

Strong figures and recognition in international rankings such as StartupBlink’s reinforce Berlin’s position as a driving force in Germany’s startup scene and a major European hub for entrepreneurship and emerging technologies.  The challenges that come with this growth can also be a catalyst for progress: Finding sustainable solutions requires a willingness to innovate.  And Berlin has no shortage of people ready to do just that.
