The Top 200 with the largest employers in Berlin

The figures from this year’s Top 200 ranking of the largest employers in Berlin’s economy show that Berlin is well positioned thanks to its broad spectrum – and many companies are still hiring. Berlin’s economy is no longer growing as strongly as in previous years, but it is still growing faster than the national average. In cooperation with Berlin Partner, the Berliner Morgenpost presents the list of the largest employers and also provides further insights and articles on Berlin as a business location.

At the end of last year, over half a million people worked for Berlin’s largest employers. That was 1.9 percent more than the previous year. Despite the tense economic situation, 100 (previous year 86) of the surveyed companies in Berlin and the immediate surrounding area further increased the number of their employees last year. In contrast, the real estate industry (plus 24.9 percent), network operators (plus 14.5 percent), the chemical industry (plus 6.8 percent), railway technology (plus 6.3 percent), utilities (plus 6.3 percent) and social services (plus 3.2 percent) grew significantly more strongly.

Deutsche Bahn remains at the top with an increase of 2.3 percent. At the end of 2024, the Group employed 26,473 people in Berlin and 941 in the immediate surroundings. This is followed by Charité with an increase of 3.6 per cent to 24,332 employees and Vivantes Netzwerk für Gesundheit with an increase of 5.2 per cent to 20,215 employees in Berlin. The healthcare industry is one of the most reliable hiring sectors. Deutsche Kreditbank, Delivery Hero, Coca-Cola, Osram, Diehl Metal Applications, KaDeWe, IAV and Vattenfall, on the other hand, made double-digit reductions. The energy company mentioned last has a 57.1 percent drop in employment on paper – which, however, is mainly due to the sale of Berlin’s district heating to the state of Berlin. A large number of employees have moved to the state-owned Berliner Energie und Wärme AG (BEW). This is the first time that BEW AG has been represented in the Top 200 - and with 2178 employees it has made it to 66th place from a standing start. Neobroker Trade Republic is also a new addition with 600 employees And after more than ten years, Zoologischen Gärten has also re-entered the Top 200 (rank 200) with an increase of 7 per cent. Berlin remains an attractive location for many entrepreneurs: The city is a hotspot for startups and offers numerous networking opportunities and an international environment. The interaction between politics, business and science is a guarantee that Berlin will continue to be more attractive for investment in the future.
