Berlin’s 200 Largest Employers
June 22, 2026 – Berlin’s economy continues to grow, even as its growth drivers evolve. That is one of the key findings of the latest ranking of the 200 largest employers in the Berlin metropolitan region, published by the Berliner Morgenpost in cooperation with Partner für Berlin. The annual analysis offers valuable insight into employment trends while highlighting the industries that are shaping – and will continue to drive – the capital’s economy.
At the end of last year, approximately 523,000 people were employed by one of the region’s 200 largest companies, representing a modest year-over-year increase of 1.0%. Employment is therefore continuing to grow, albeit at a slower pace than in previous years; in 2024, the increase stood at 1.9%. Overall, 84 companies expanded their workforce, while 53 reported a decline in employee numbers.
Healthcare, retail, and the rail industry are currently among the sectors making the strongest contribution to employment growth. Deutsche Bahn once again tops the ranking, followed by Charité and Vivantes, Berlin’s two largest healthcare providers. Other major employers include Edeka, BVG, Rewe, , Deutsche Post, Tesla, Mercedes-Benz, and Johannesstift Diakonie.
The ranking also highlights notable momentum among several fast-growing employers. The healthcare provider Alexianer, which has significantly expanded its presence in Berlin, recorded workforce growth of 32.1%, followed by transmission system operator 50Hertz (+18.1%) and Berliner Energie und Wärme AG (+15.2%).
Looking ahead, companies remain cautiously optimistic. Most expect employment levels to remain stable over the coming year, while a number plan to continue hiring. Only a small share anticipate workforce reductions. At the same time, there is broad agreement that attracting skilled professionals and investing in the next generation of talent will remain essential to Berlin’s long-term competitiveness. As Claus Pretzell, economist at IBB, notes: “Companies must not make the mistake of cutting back on hiring or training young people simply because growth has slowed.”
At the same time, Berlin continues to invest strategically in future-oriented industries, including New Space, artificial intelligence, and sustainable business. Healthcare, in particular, remains one of the capital’s strongest engines of growth.
